The New York-Dublin Portal Has Been Shut Down After Less Than 10 Days

For those unfamiliar: The New York–Dublin Portal is an interactive installation created by Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, that gives New York City and Dublin visitors the ability to interact with each other using two 24-hour live streaming videoconferencing screens.

It took less than 10 days to get this one shut down. Apparently some people have been doing inappropriate things in front of the portal.

This is one of the reasons why it’s been shut down:

Find me one person in Dublin who is upset by this. I’ve met a ton of Irish people in my life, hell, I’m even a touch Irish myself (from the waist down), and I’ve gotta tell ya, we all love boobs. It’s pretty rare to find someone whose day is made worse by seeing boobs.

People have also been showing some pretty graphic cell phone images, like hardcore porn and 9/11-type stuff. Both of which are not cool.

I have a question though- who the fuck didn’t see this coming?

If you told me yesterday you were building something like this my first response to you would be, you know someone is gonna show hole, right? And once that gets started, it’s going to turn into a constant barrage of people one-upping each other with awful acts.

In theory it’s a really cool device that allows strangers across the world to connect to people they otherwise would have never met, sort of like Chat Roulette, and we all know how that worked out.

We can’t have nice things folks. I think that has been made abundantly clear.
